Lately life has given me penguins…. everywhere. And so I have been working away on my pattern for a penguin. At this stage I am super happy with how he has come out, and so many versions are floating about the country. This version is completely no-sew – but if you are new to no-sew, feel free to leave the pieces separate and sew them on at the end.

For this penguin, he will scale in size based on your yarn and hook choice. The main thing is to make sure that your hook and yarn size match. The best way to check is to look at your yarn label and pick the smallest size recommended by the manufacturer…. or use your own personal combination.
The full video tutorial is found here on my YouTube Channel. Please like it, comment if you so desire – I respond to all comments. Share it if you want to, and subscribe. I post videos twice weekly.
There is also an interactive crochet pattern here on Ribblr. I do enjoy this platform a great deal. I may also offer this pattern on Etsy in time as a downloadable PDF…. but at this stage, it does not exist in a neat PDF format for download. You can however download a PDF from Ribblr.
My favourite size is the 4.5mm hook with a chunky weight yarn. The video tutorial uses size 3.5mm hook and DK weight yarn.
Note on inc and dec instructions. All inc instructions are for an increase – this is 2 single crochet stitches in the same stitch (increasing the number in the row). Invisible increases are optional… I use standard ones and I don’t have a problem with creating wee holes…. but the crochet police are not coming for you, increase in any manner you like. Dec is a decrease where 2 stitches are crocheted together decreasing the number of stitches in a row. I use invisible decreases – but only because I learned them first. The decreases on the bottom of the penguin are definitely easier done as regular decreases if you are using a dark yarn. Again, use any decrease method you desire.
I feel like this pattern is easily market ready – the parts can be crocheted in “production line” style. I recently sat at a birthday party crocheting custom penguins where children chose their outer colour – which I completed easily because I had a stack of the small pieces pre-made ready to go.
You will need:
– Crochet hook
– Yarn in 3 colours – I use a body colour, white and yellow for the beak and feet
– Darning needle, stitch marker, scissors
