Classic Checkerboard Dish or Washcloth – Knitting pattern

Published by

on

My obsession with cleaning cloths continues- and yes, a whole range of ones for baby will be on the blog shortly, as a number of my friends and family are either pregnant or just had a wee baby.

But this is a classic, simple knit, and it looks neat as.

You will need:
DK cotton yarn – plain colour for the best effect
4mm knitting needles

Cast on 42 stitches

Rows 1-6: s1, knit 5, purl 5, knit 5, purl 5, knit 5, purl 5, knit 5, purl 6
Rows 7-12: s1, purl 5, knit 5, purl 5, knit 5, purl 5, knit 5, purl 5, knit 6

Repeat these 12 rows 3 more times. This creates a nice 8×8 grid of a checkerboard with a really neat salvage edge on the sides.

Cast off. Either darn in the tails or crochet a hanging loop.

Hello! By s1, do you just mean slip the first stitch, is that correct? Are you always slipping each row purl-wise? Thank you so much 🙂

Hiya- I always slip the first stitch – but the direction depends on the following stitch. Knitwise when it’s a knit section, and purlwise when it’s a purl section…. if that makes sense?
