I should start by saying that I have been completely obsessed with Pokemon since Red and Blue came out… and I was at university then. Probably would have done slightly better academically in my second year if I didn’t decide to master Pokemon Blue instead….
Anyway, this begins a 3 part evolution series of Pokemon Hats. This week is Bellsprout. I have always loved Bellsprout as one of those handy plant type pokemon who are useful in battle.
You will need:
- Yellow DK yarn (1 ball)
- Beige DK yarn (small amount)
- 4mm Circular knitting needle
- 2 goggle eyes
- Darning needle
Cast on 100 stitches in Beige.
Knit 12 rotations. This will start to roll up on itself. Don’t stress about it, that is the plan.
For 2 rotations, knit 1, purl 1 (repeating the rib pattern over the whole of the 2 rotations). This will prevent the bottom of the hat rolling any further.
Change to yellow yarn.
Knit 48 rotations in yellow yarn.
Top of the hat decreasing.
Knit 3, knit 2 together – repeat over the whole row.
Knit one row
Knit 2, knit 2 together – repeat over the whole row

Cut yarn with 30 centimetres remaining. Thread onto a darning needle. Slip all remaining stitches through the needle and pull the thread tight to the top of the hat. Secure this shut using the yarn tail. Darn in your ends.
Soon the pattern upgrade to this will be released evolving your Bellsprout hall into a Weepinbell.
100 stitches is too large for my granddaughters. Will I have any difficulty using say 90 stitches?
No worries at all… you can easily change the number of stitches.
