Remembrance Day Poppy Knitting Pattern

FLiving in the town where all the soldiers trained to leave for WWI keeps the war right in the centre of your vision. Yesterday a sculpture was unveiled for remembrance of those who fought, and those who were left behind.

It’s also the time of year that knitted poppies appear, perfect for yarn bombing. A few years ago this pattern was released. And we made this ANZAC wreath for the school which hangs during our commemorations.

All going well this pattern goes live at 11:11 on the 11 of November, NZ time.

You will need:

  • 4mm knitting needles
  • DK red yarn
  • Darning needle
  • Black button

Cast on 40 stitches.

K2, P2 over the whole row for 6 rows.

K2 tog, P2 tog over whole row

K1, P1 rib for 3 rows

Cut yarn, thread through the remaining 20 stitches and pull tight. Shape into a circle, stitch the side together. Darn in the tails. Sew a black button into the centre of the flower.

Use to create a wreath, a brooch, or yarn bombing…. or any other yarn based decoration.
