Mallard Duck

You will need:

• 3.5mm knitting needles
• DK yarn in brown, white, emerald green, yellow, (orange and purple optional)
• Stuffing
• Safety eyes – or embroider them on with the black yarn
• Darning needle and scissors

Body

Cast on 10 stitches in brown

1. Knit the whole row
2. Purl 1, make 1 – repeat over the row to the last stitch – p1 (19)
3. Knit the whole row
4. Purl 2, make 1 – repeat over the row to the last stitch – p1 (28)
5. Knit the whole row
6. Purl the whole row
7. Knit 2, make 1, knit 2, make 1, knit to the last 4 stitches, make 1, knit 2, make 1, knit 2 (32)
8. Purl
9. Knit
10. Purl
11. Knit 2, make 1, knit 2, make 1, knit to the last 4 stitches, make 1, knit 2, make 1, knit 2 (36)
12. Purl

15. Knit 1, k2 tog, k2tog, knit to last 5, k2 together through the back loop, k2 together through the back loop, knit 1
16. P3 together, cut your yarn, thread tail through the p3 together. Reattach yarn and purl to the last 3 stitches. P3 together, cut your yarn, thread the tail through the p3 together.
17. Reattach yarn to the main piece. Knit whole row

20. Change to white – Purl
21. K2, k2 tog – repeat over the row to the last 2 stitches, knit 2 (20)
22. Change to Green – Purl

35. Knit 1, k2 tog – repeat over row to the last 2 stitches. Knit 2,

37. K2 tog over the whole row, cut the yarn with 20cm tail remaining, thread through the remaining stitches, pull to tighten.

Wing – make 2 – purple spot is optional. If not doing it, just knit the purple stitches in brown.

Cast on 3 in white

1. Knit whole row
2. P1, m1, p1, m1, p1 (5)
3. K1, m1, k3, m1, k1 (7)
4. P1, m1, p5, m1, p1 (9) – cut yarn with a 10cm tail, slide this work to the end of needle. Cast on another 3 stitches and repeat rows 1-4 on these stitches. Slide them together when complete and treat as one piece of work.
5. Change to brown – Knit all the stitches joining both sections as one.
6. Purl
7. Knit 8 brown, 2 purple, 8 brown
8. Purl 7 brown, 4 purple, 7 brown
9. Knit 8 brown, 2 purple, 8 brown
10. P1, p2 together, p4, p2 together through back loops, p2 together, p4, p2 together through back loops, p1
11. K1, k2 together through back loops, k2, k2 together, k2 together through back loops, k2, k2 together, k1
12. P1, p2 together, p2 together through back loops, p2 together, p2 together through back loops, p1
13. Knit row.
14. P1, p2 together, p2 together through back loops, p1
15. K2 together through back loops, k2 together. Cut yarn with 10cm tail remaining. Thread through remaining 2 stitches and pull tight.

Beak

Cast on 10 in yellow

2. Purl
3. Knit
4. Purl
5. K1, k2 tog – repeat over row to last stitch, k1. Cut yarn with 10cm tail remaining. Thread through remaining stitches and pull tight.

Feet – make 2

Cast on 3 in orange (orange is more accurate but yellow looks more aesthetically pleasing)

3. K1, m1, k1, m1, k1
4. Purl
5. Picot bind off – cast on 2, cast off 4, cast on 2, cast off 4, cast on 2, cast off 3.

Body – pull the yarn from the cast off tight, thread onto your darning needle. Fold the work in half, and stitch the sides together on the white end – this is the head. Using the tail from the cast on, run a running stitch through the cast on stitches and pull tight. Stitch up the back of the duck to the tip of his tail. Add the eyes at this point, and stuff. Stitch the last of the back up.

Wings – fold in half. Using the yarn tails, stitch the sides closed. Stitch these to either side of the body, just below the white neckline.

Feet – gently “squish” each of the toes, and secure with a stitch on each one just to shape them a little. Pin them to the bottom of the body so that they are placed symmetrically. 

Beak – fold in half with the pulled stitches at the tip of the bill. Stitch up the side of the 4 stockinette stitch rows. Roll the beak so that the seam is directly under the centre of the bill. Stitch to the middle of his face.
