Easter Egg Chick – Free Knitting Pattern

Today we are making Creme Egg Chicks – or Easter Egg Chicks – cute little chickens that are going to cover our chocolate eggs and look adorable on the table.

You will need:
– DK or aran weight yarn in chicken and nest shades
– 3.5mm needles – or 4mm – or 4.5mm – Larger the yarn, larger the needle.
– Scissors
– Darning needle

Chicken Body

Cast on 20 stitches in the nest shade. I used a tan/beige
1. Knit
2. Purl
3. Knit
4. Purl
5. Knit
6. Purl – Change to chicken colour
7. K1, p1 – repeat over the row
8. P1, k1 – repeat over row
9. Kfb, knit to last stitch, kfb (22)
10. Purl
11. Kfb, knit to last stitch, kfb (24)
12. Purl
13. K1, SSK, knit to the last 3, k2tog, k1 (22)
14. P1, p2tog, purl to the last 3, p2tog through back loop, p1 (20)
15. K1, SSK, knit to the last 3, k2tog, k1 (18)
16. P1, p2tog, purl to the last 3, p2tog through back loop, p1 (16)
17. K1, SSK, knit to the last 3, k2tog, k1 (14)
18. P1, p2tog, purl to the last 3, p2tog through back loop, p1 (12)
19. Knit
20. Purl
21. Knit
22. Purl
23. K2 together over whole row (6)

Cut yarn with a 20cm tail. Thread on a darning needle and through the remaining 6 stitches. Pull tight. Use this tail to seam up the backbone of the chicken.

Beak

Cast on 4 stitches
1. K2tog, k2tog (2)
Cut yarn with a 10cm tail. Thread on a darning needle and through the remaining 2 stitches. Pull tight. Use this tail to stitch the beak to the face of the chicken.

Comb

Cast on 7 stitches
1. k1, YO, k2tog, YO, k2tog, YO, k2tog
2. Cast off using purl stitches.
Cut yarn with a 15cm tail. Thread on a darning needle. Fold the comb so that the cast on and cast off edges are touching. Stitch to the top of the chickens head.
