This pattern was released in the February 2017 newsletter, but it is being released publicly in preparation for Valentines Day.

This is a pattern for a flat knitted heart – perfect for bunting, sewing as an applique, or attaching to a card.

You will need:

  • DK yarn
  • Darning needle
  • Optional: Stuffing, string, pinbacks, keyrings, clips

This is knitted top down, starting at the curves at the top of the heart, ending at the point at the bottom.

Cast on 3 – You will end up making 2 on the one needle

  1. Knit 1 front and back, knit 1, knit 1 front and back (5 stitches)
  2. Knit all stitches
  3. Slip 1, knit 1 front and back, knit 1, knit 1 front and back, knit 1 (7 stitches)

  7. Slip 1, knit 1 front and back, knit 5, knit 1 front and back, knit 1 (11 stitches)
  8. Knit 3, purl 5, knit 3
  9. Knit all stitches
  10. Knit 3, purl 5, knit 3

Cut yarn with 20cm tail.  Slide to the side, and cast on 3 for the second part.

Slide both sections together

  1. Knit 10, knit 2 together but before moving the stitches off, knit into the back of these stitches so that you end up with 2 stitches instead of decreasing, knit 10
  2. Knit 3, purl 16, knit 3
  3. Knit whole row
  4. Knit 3, purl 16, knit 3
  5. Knit 2, ssk, knit to last 4, knit 2 together, knit 2

  12. Knit 3, purl 8, knit 3
  13. Knit 2, ssk, knit to last 4, knit 2 together, knit 2
  14. Knit 3, purl 6, knit 3
  15. Knit 2, ssk, knit to last 4, knit 2 together, knit 2
  16. Knit 3, purl 4, knit 3
  17. Knit 2, ssk, knit to last 4, knit 2 together, knit 2
  18. Knit 3, purl 2, knit 3
  19. Knit 2, ssk, knit 2 together, knit 2
  20. Knit whole row
  21. Knit 1, ssk, knit 2 together, knit 2
  22. Ssk, knit 2 together
  23. Purl 2 together, cut yarn, thread through stitch, pull tight.

The flat heart needs blocking to stay flat.  Darn in your tails.

You can make 2 and sew them back to back and stuff them (or fill with a pocket of lavender).  Or stay tuned for another great Valentines pattern on Sunday.

I have made up three of these and each time when I get to row 19 after following the pattern I don’t have the correct number of stitches to complete the heart

Hiya – I’ll have a look at the pattern and see if I can see what’s up with it. (It’s an older one). I do have a more modern heart pattern listed about a month ago if you are looking for one that is definitely accurate – and it has a video tutorial.

        hi

that would great if you have a pattern similar to this please.

I like the edging on this and it’s a nice size heart

hiya can you please explain how to do row 1 when joining the top 2 pieces together.

I’m struggling with the k2tog bit

    thank you

Hiya – the knit 2 together through the front and back loops can be tricky – and it’s not actually necessary. You can just slide the 2 sections together and then darn in the yarn tails to close the stitches more securely at the end. I do have a YouTube video which shows the technique with a slightly different heart here: Knitting for Valentines Day 2025 – Heart Decoration and more free patterns

hey sorry I couldn’t send all of my message last night sorry to be a pain i guess I’m wondering if you kfb into both stitches before k2 together

    1. juanamac Avatar

That’s ok. No. Knit the 2 together, but before you remove the stitch from the needle, knit into the back of the stitch. Basically you are not increasing the overall stitch count of the row, just joining the 2 sections together. It is an unnecessary step – you can just slide the 2 pieces together and knit across the row ignoring the instruction to KFB into the K2tog. Does that help?

Great thanks that’s what I have been doing.

once you have joined them together are rows 2 and 4 the same k3 p16 k3

sorry I’m just trying to work out where I am going wrong

      2. juanamac Avatar

Yes, that is correct, those rows just add length to the heart.

hi sorry for all the messages but I have finally worked out where the pattern goes wrong.

if you look at row 21 it starts with k1 then ends with k2 which should be k1 instead

You’re a legend! Brilliant. Thank you.
