Springtime Baby Booties

These booties are sweet, and a very quick knit.  Perfect for newborn babies, in their first few months.

You will need:

    • 3.5mm straight knitting needles
    • 4ply baby yarn
    • Darning needle
    • Optional: ribbon for the ties

Cast on 35 stitches (this is the bottom of the foot)
1. Knit
2. k1, k1 front and back, k14, k1 front and back, k1, k1 front and back, k14, k1 front and back, k1
3. Knit
4. k1, k1 front and back, k16, k1 front and back, k1, k1 front and back, k16, k1 front and back, k1
5. Knit
6. k1, k1 front and back, k18, k1 front and back, k1, k1 front and back, k18, k1 front and back, k1

Knit 10 rows

Shaping the top of the foot

This is done with a series of short rows.
Knit 19, k2 tog, knit 5, k2 tog, s1 purlwise, turn
P2 tog, p5, p2 tog, s1, turn
K2 tog, knit 5, k2 tog, s1 purlwise, turn
P2 tog, p5, p2 tog, s1, turn
K2 tog, knit 5, k2 tog, s1 purlwise, turn
P2 tog, p5, p2 tog, s1, turn
K2 tog, knit 5, k2 tog, s1 purlwise, turn
P2 tog, p5, p2 tog, s1, turn
K2 tog, knit 5, k2 tog, knit to end

P1, yarn over, p2 tog, – repeat to end of row (This is the row to thread the laces through)

Row 1: Knit 1 *K2tog, yo, K2 repeat from * until the last 2 stitches, knit 2
Row 2: Purl all sts
Row 3: Knit 1 *K2, yo, slip the first stitch as if to knit, slip the second stitch as if to knit, then slide the left-handed needle into the front part of both stitches and knit them together. repeat from * until the last 2 stitches, knit 2
Row 4: Purl all sts

Cast off by knitting into the front and back of each stitch to increase and cast off at once.  Fold the bootie in half, and stitch from the top down the ankle, and the foot.
