The Weasley Jumper Hat. -Free Knitting Pattern

This pattern has been floating around for the longest time. I had thought that I had released it, but it appears to be the opposite. So here it is anew. There are 3 sizes here. The smallest one works best for children. The largest for adults. I wear the middle size.

For the “Ron” version – knit in maroon with a gold letter. For the “Harry” version, use an emerald green and gold.

You will need:
– DK yarn in the main colour (100gm)
– Size 4.5mm knitting needles
– darning needle
– contrasting colour (not a lot)
– 2 stitch markers

Cast on 100 (112, 120) stitches in the main colour.
Knit 1, Purl 1 rib over 20 rows.
Stockinette stitch 4 rows (knit one row, purl one row).

Setting up for the letter

From the left hand side of the knitting, count 20 stitches. Place marker.
From this marker working to the right, count 16 stitches for the H (or 18 for the R). Place marker here also.

Continuing to knit all right side rows, knit to the stitch marker. Follow the chart to create the H.
On all wrong side rows, continue to purl to the first marker and follow the chart.

Continue this over the next 20 rows which will create the letter. (If you have specific letter requests, comment below and I shall create and upload the charts).

Stockinette stitch in the main colour 4 (8, 12) rows.

Decreasing for the top of the hat

  1. Knit 3, knit 2 together – continue over the whole row.
  2. Purl whole row
  3. Knit 2, knit 2 together – continue over the whole row.
  4. Purl whole row
  5. Knit 1, knit 2 together – continue over the whole row.
  6. Purl whole row
  7. Knit 2 together – continue over the whole row.
  8. Purl whole row
  9. Knit 2 together – continue over the whole row.

Cut the yarn with 30cm or so remaining, thread the yarn onto a darning needle. Thread the needle through the remaining stitches, and pull to tighten. Fold the hat in half and stitch up the seam of the hat. Darn in your yarn tails.

You can give this hat a pom-pom or a tassel if you like.

  2. Hi! I love this. My daughter and her friends are in a real Harry Potter phase at the moment. I’d love to make them all hats for Christmas. Their first initials are H (thank you!) S and C. Would you mind doing an S and C chart? Thank you very much!!!
