12 Days of Christmas – Day 10 – Knitted Washcloth

Okay, so what is a craft countdown without a gag gift…. and what better gag is a cloth for cleaning as a gift…. but do yourself a favour, don’t make this the only gift.

I love these, and nothing cleans glass shower doors as well as these.  This is similar to the Grandmother’s favourite dishcloth pattern in that it knits from the corner.

You will need:

  • DK Cotton yarn in white
  • DK Cotton yarn in red
  • 4mm straight needle
  • 2 stitch markers
  • Darning needle
  • Red ribbon remnant

Cast on 3 stitches in white.
1: Knit 1, yarn over, knit to the end of the row. (4 stitches)
2: Knit 1, yarn over, knit to the end of the row. (5 stitches)
3: Knit 1, yarn over, knit to the end of the row (6 stitches)
4: Knit 1, yarn over, knit 1, purl to the last 3 stitches, to the end of the row  (7 stitches)

Repeat rows 3 and 4 until you have 39 stitches on the needle.
Place 2 stitch markers – one after 14 stitches, and then after another 10.

10: Knit 2 together, yarn over, knit 2 together, purl to marker, insert chart row 8, purl to last 3, knit 3.

Cut off the red yarn.  Continue decreasing by repeating the following rows:

1: Knit 2 together, yarn over, knit 2 together, knit to the end
2: Knit 2 together, yarn over, knit 2 together, purl to  last 3, knit 3.

Option 1: K3 together, cut yarn, thread yarn through stitch and pull tight. This creates a square cloth.

Option 2: Continue until you have 3 stitches remaining.  Slip these stitches onto double pointed needles.  Icord 10 rows. Cast off.  Stitch icord section into a hanging loop.

Block with a hot iron on steam.

Take a small section of ribbon and tie a bow on top of the chart as shown.
