1 Hour Beanie – Free Knitting Pattern

Published by

on

Everyone needs a go-to pattern for a rush gift. This beanie fits the bill as being super cute, and knits up quickly in super chunky yarn. Given that its such a super easy, very cute, and super giftable hat, I am flipping my Friday pattern release schedule and dropping this on a Monday…. so that it’s possible to make more by Christmas Eve. You’ll just have to suffer through another knitting blog without a pattern on Friday instead.

Who wouldn’t love this 1 hour beanie?

You will need:
– super chunky yarn – I used Lionbrand Hometown
– 9mm circular knitting needle
– Darning needle
– optional pom pom – I used one of these fur ones from this pattern

Cast on 40 (44, 48) stitches

Knit 1, Purl 1 – repeat this over the whole row for a 1×1 rib.
Complete 12 (13, 14) rows of ribbing

Stockinette stitch 14 (15, 16) rows
Change colours (this is optional, so feel free to carry on without colour changing)
Stockinette stitch 4 (5, 6) rows

Shaping the crown
Knit 2, knit 2 together – repeat over the whole row
Knit 1 row
Knit 1, knit 2 together – repeat over the whole row
Knit 1 row
Knit 2 together over the whole row
Knit 1 row
Knit 2 together over the whole row.

Cut yarn with 30cm yarn tail remaining. Thread this through the remaining stitches and pull tight. Stitch the top of the hat closed. Fasten a pom pom to the top. I made one of these – which takes about 10 minutes.

There is now a flat knitted version found here: https://theknitguru.com/?p=108218

The pattern is now available on Ribblr also: https://ribblr.com/pattern/the-one-hour-beanie-Knitting?referrer=356843

Is this pattern supposed to be knit in the round?

    1. juanamac Avatar

Yep. It can be done flat and seamed. Just make sure you knit and purl alternative rows after the ribbing.

OK, thanks! The free written pattern did not say to join in the round and when I read to thread the end piece thru the remaining stitches at the top of the hat, I made a presumption that it must be knit in the round and just had to ask and make sure. Merry Christmas!

Good spotting! I’ll edit it later on. Thank you.

I love your pattern and have knit up six since I started. It’s a real confidence builder for us beginners.

    What are the 3 sizes?

    Cast on 40 (44, 48) stitches

    1. juanamac Avatar

Just a small, medium and large. The large will fit all adult heads. I wear the medium size

What needle size did you use?

    1. juanamac Avatar

9mm circular needle. I usually use a 40-60cm cable on my hat projects- if that helps.

Can you give me a cast on number for a toddler hat? Or is the yarn too chunky for a toddler??

    1. juanamac Avatar

I would say it’s too chunky for a toddler. You could totally make one with 10 less stitches – but I find that toddlers don’t like the added weight of a super bulky yarn. Especially if they are still unsteady on their feet. 👍

Do you use a 16 inch length circular cable with a 9 mm needle?

    1. juanamac Avatar

Yes, the shortest cable you can manage is my recommendation. Or 2 9mm circulars…. I really need to post how I knit things in the round….

Hi, I would like to knit this hat, but I think it might be too small for a 24 inch head. Is there a way To adjust the pattern for a larger head?

    1. juanamac Avatar

Hiya – if you are worried about the size, add in an extra 4 stitches … or any multiple of 4 stitches. It’s a big yarn and big needles… so it grows quickly. Just add in a few more rows before the decreases at the top.

Hi, would the smallest size fit an 8 year old boy?

    1. juanamac Avatar

Hiya – I would go for the middle size for an 8 year old boy. 👍 (just because heads grow so fast)

When shaping the crown, shouldn’t the even rows be purled?

    1. juanamac Avatar

It’s knit in the round, so they just need knitting. If you are doing it flat, then they get purled. 👍

I love this pattern! I have knit six hats since I found the pattern. I have made solid as well as stripes! It always turns out perfect. Thank you for sharing

That’s fantastic to hear! I’m so glad.

can you use 2 straight needles and if so what UK size please. Susan Jackson

    1. juanamac Avatar

You totally can. I use a 9mm needle here in NZ, and according to a size converter that’s a 00 in the UK….

    2. juanamac Avatar

Yes, you can knit this flat with 2 needles. The needle size is 9mm – which is a 00 according to a converter.
