Everyone needs a go-to pattern for a rush gift. This beanie fits the bill as being super cute, and knits up quickly in super chunky yarn. Given that its such a super easy, very cute, and super giftable hat, I am flipping my Friday pattern release schedule and dropping this on a Monday…. so that it’s possible to make more by Christmas Eve. You’ll just have to suffer through another knitting blog without a pattern on Friday instead.
You will need:
– super chunky yarn – I used Lionbrand Hometown
– 9mm circular knitting needle
– Darning needle
– optional pom pom – I used one of these fur ones from this pattern
Cast on 40 (44, 48) stitches
Knit 1, Purl 1 – repeat this over the whole row for a 1×1 rib.
Complete 12 (13, 14) rows of ribbing
Stockinette stitch 14 (15, 16) rows
Change colours (this is optional, so feel free to carry on without colour changing)
Stockinette stitch 4 (5, 6) rows
Shaping the crown
Knit 2, knit 2 together – repeat over the whole row
Knit 1 row
Knit 1, knit 2 together – repeat over the whole row
Knit 1 row
Knit 2 together over the whole row
Knit 1 row
Knit 2 together over the whole row.
Cut yarn with 30cm yarn tail remaining. Thread this through the remaining stitches and pull tight. Stitch the top of the hat closed. Fasten a pom pom to the top. I made one of these – which takes about 10 minutes.
Is this pattern supposed to be knit in the round?
Yep. It can be done flat and seamed. Just make sure you knit and purl alternative rows after the ribbing.
OK, thanks! The free written pattern did not say to join in the round and when I read to thread the end piece thru the remaining stitches at the top of the hat, I made a presumption that it must be knit in the round and just had to ask and make sure. Merry Christmas!
Good spotting! I’ll edit it later on. Thank you.
You are quite welcome; thanks for the free pattern!
I love your pattern and have knit up six since I started. It’s a real confidence builder for us beginners.
